Reid State uses the Accuplacer test to assess students to determine their reading, English and math skills. Placement scores help academic advisors recommend courses that are appropriate for you. The Accuplacer test is untimed. If you require accommodations, beyond extended time, contact the ADA representative prior to testing. Do I have to take the Accuplacer test? You must take the assessment test unless you are exempt. Students may be exempt from taking the Accuplacer if they have transfer degree-creditable, college-level English or Mathematics courses with a grade of “C” or better from an accredited institution or by providing minimum qualifying SAT or ACT scores in English and/or math as follows:
What is the Accuplacer? The Accuplacer is a computerized self-paced, untimed test. Most students complete the test within 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The test is adaptive; the Accuplacer determines which questions will be given next based upon previous answers. This provides a more accurate method of measuring an individual student's skill levels than a general test. It also means that no two tests taken are precisely the same. You are encouraged to give each question as much thought as you wish before selecting your final answer. Your scores will determine which English and math courses you are eligible to take. The Accuplacer has three parts: The Accuplacer placement test has sections in Writing, Reading and Math. The writing test is in essay format; a 300-600 word essay on a provided topic. Reading and math are multiple-choice. Scratch paper and pencils are provided; handheld calculators are not allowed. However, an electronic calculator is available within the testing software. Students are strongly encouraged to prepare for testing using the Accuplacer free web-based study app available at accuplacerpractice.collegeboard.org/login. Retest A student who wishes to challenge placement results may retest once per academic year provided there is evidence the student has completed test preparation activities. Reid State will charge a one-time fee for retesting of $10.00. Students will be allowed to retest in only the deficient subject area; Math, Reading, or Writing. Placement test scores will be valid for three years from the date of the original or retest assessment. Currently enrolled students will not be allowed to retest unless changing majors. (i.e., Nursing Assistant changing to LPN or another program that requires specific scores.) *Special Accommodations Student requiring special accommodations should contact the Testing Coordinator at 251-578-1313 xt.149.
